Abstract

A breakthrough of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seaof 1982 (UNCLOS) was the establishment of a comprehensive system of compulsoryprocedures for international dispute settlement in the law of the sea. This articleprovides an overview of the Annex VII UNCLOS arbitral tribunal and its role inresolving environmental disputes through case law. It sheds light on the jurisdictionaldevelopments and fact-finding procedure innovations made by the South China SeaArbitral Tribunal in the field of the environment.
